Before you replace your windows: 5 questions to ask

New windows can cut drafts and noise, but they are a big purchase. These questions help you decide calmly.

1. Is it the window or the seal?

Fog between panes, soft frames or drafts you can feel usually mean the unit is failing. A single loose latch or worn weatherstrip is often a cheap repair.

2. How many windows actually need work?

Walk the house and list each window with its problem. Replacing only the worst ones first is a valid plan.

3. What do you want to improve?

Energy use, noise, safety or looks? Your answer decides the glass and frame type, and keeps the quote focused.

4. Are you comparing the same thing?

Ask every installer for the same details: frame material, glass type, installation method, warranty and removal of old units.

5. Is there pressure to sign today?

A fair quote is still fair tomorrow. Take time to compare at least two or three written estimates.
